Frequently Asked Questions About Masonry
or
Who are the Masons and why are they involved in Student Assistance Programs?

Masons are members of the oldest fraternity in the world, known as masonry or Freemasonry. A fraternity is a group of men, like a sorority is a group of women who join together because:

  1. There are things they want to contribute to the world through charity,
  2. They want to reinforce personal qualities in themselves like honesty, compassion, love and trust and
  3. They enjoy being together with men they like and respect.

Masonry teaches that each person has a responsibility to make things better in the world. Masonry is deeply involved with helping people. The fraternity spends more than $1.4 million dollars every day in the United States just to make life a little easier, mostly for people who are not Masons. They focus their charities on the young, the old and the under-privileged.

Contributors to the IL Masonic Foundation SAP believe that working with teachers and schools will allow them to extend their reach of their dollars and allow more young people to get the support they need to be successful.
